About the position
Reporting to the Team Leader, Strategic Planning Advisory, the Planning Officer is a member of a team responsible for the leading provision of strategic planning advice. You will use your initiative to prioritise tasks and monitor workflow in providing high quality advice to local and state government, aligned to strategic priorities to prevent harm to Victorian communities and the environment from pollution and waste.

Working under direction from the Team Leader, Strategic Planning Advisory, you will actively contribute to a positive organisational culture and achieve the highest standards of performance and integrity; fostering genuine partnerships across all levels of government, industry, and community to deliver organisational outcomes.
Key accountabilities
1. Use your initiative to prioritise tasks and monitor your workflow in the delivery of organisational priorities in accordance with approved project / service plans, achieving the highest standards of performance, accountability,
collaboration, ethics, and integrity.
2. Actively contribute to the development of a positive and high performing team culture, including by identifying and implementing opportunities to improve teamwork practices.
3. Working under the direction of the Team Leader Strategic Planning Advisory, support the provision of strategic advice and support to planning officers within State and local government, including advice on structure or precinct plans,
planning scheme amendments and planning policy or process to ensure the prevention of harm to the environment and human health is considered up front in land use planning.
4. Support and enable the continued development of planning functions so that the primacy of prevention of harm is central to all statutory planning decisions.
5. Undertake administrative processes and other tasks as directed for the effective achievement of regulatory outcomes; ensure that all Government policies and procedures, such and financial management, occupational health and safety, and conduct are complied with.
6. Represent positively in engaging with the community and duty holders to build knowledge and awareness of the laws that protect our environment and human health from pollution and waste.
Key selection criteria
1. Experience and qualifications
• A relevant tertiary degree and/or post graduate qualifications is desirable.
2. Knowledge and skills
• Knowledge of the Environment Protection Act 2017, Environmental Effects Act 1978, and Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990.
• Knowledge of the Victorian Planning System.
• Knowledge of strategic and statutory planning processes, and the translation of policy and guidance into practical application.
• Ability to apply relevant government legislation, regulations, reporting directives and procedures, to achieve optimal organisational outcomes.
• A broad understanding of environmental regulation as it relates to pollution and waste is desirable.
